International Women's Day

This year’s UN theme of Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress is so relevant to Women’s Health which is sorely lacking due to gaps in research, innovation, and funding.

We need research to advance our understanding and management of conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS, menopause, autoimmune disease, and cardiovascular disease, to name just a few of the conditions which significantly impact women’s lives and quality of life and are understudied in women.

Many innovations in devices and pharmaceuticals are not suited to women due to historic lack of data and understanding. Many medications were not studied in women and require dosage adjustments to avoid harm. Sex and gender bias has led to a lack of data and underrepresentation of women in clinical trials.

Despite the huge market potential (US$97 billion to upwards of US$1.2 trillion by 2030) of Women’s health with a pipeline of new diagnostic devices, digital platforms specifically catered to meet women’s health needs, non-cancer women-specific conditions account for just 2% of the healthcare product pipeline, despite the burden of these diseases.

It is time to invest in Women. Encouraging women to study science and technology. Promoting and funding women researchers who can study and close the data gaps. Investing in women as innovators who develop technologies to meet women’s specific healthcare needs, taking their anatomy, physiology, response to treatment and environment into account. This innovation will drive the progress we sorely need to ensure equitable healthcare for all women, all economies, and all societies.
